Dear Sukhwinder,
Your doctor is right. You MUST have the implants removed. It was worth a try the first time, but you still have the infection. Then you must be treated with aggressive antibiotics. The hassle and expense of another DBS surgery pales in comparison to developing a brain abscess or worse. This is straight talk. Take care of this soon.

I have had many problems with DBS infection
which required removal and re-implant. The
infection was caused from what they call Staph infction . Bacteria on the hands of people the people that worked there. The
other on my scalp was called skin errosion
due to the lead and connector been too. close
to the surface of the skin. The other problem
was caused by what they called foreign
material rejection. Your problem should be addressed by your neuosurgeon as soon as possible. Lee

I am from Malaysia and I had DBS of STN done in India in January 2003 and had satisfactory results. About 2 months later I had infection of the scalp which I was recommended by my local doctor to go back to where I had the dbs done to get the implants removed. I went back to the hospital and was hospitalised and got the wound cleaned up and antibiotics injected and implants left intact. After about 2 weeks the stitches were removed and I returned home. At the time I was thinking it was an infection from outside the body. But now after another 6 months the infection has reappeared at the same spot. The local doctor who is the same I saw last time has again told me that I have to get the implants removed. I believe it is a very expensive exercise to have the expensive implants now taken out and not be reusable leave alone the risks of surgery to take them out and then put them back, I want to know if any body has had such expeience and the pain you have gone thru, If I leave the implants there is risk of the infection spreading. Is there any tests I can do to know at which stage the infection is so that I can be more certain that I have got to remove the implants. It appears that I have to bear a heavy burden of expenses again for this to be corrected, I am healthy at the moment otherwise. Please reply asap. Thank you.
